Lamb and sheep meat Imports

In 2017, the amount of lamb and sheep meat imported worldwide totaled 1.1M tonnes, leveling off at the previous year level. Overall, lamb and sheep meat imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, when it surged by 18% against the previous year level. Global import peaked of 1.1M tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports amounted to $6.3B in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global import peaked of $6.8B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Lamb and sheep meat Imports By Country

In 2017, China (237K tonnes), distantly followed by the U.S. (93K tonnes), France (88K tonnes), and the UK (81K tonnes) were the main importers of lamb and sheep meat, together achieving 46% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (47K tonnes), Germany (44K tonnes), Malaysia (39K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (37K tonnes), the Netherlands (27K tonnes), Jordan (27K tonnes), Italy (24K tonnes), and Canada (23K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest growing in terms of the lamb and sheep meat imports, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, the Netherlands (+9.6%), Malaysia (+8.2%), Jordan (+5.5%), the U.S. (+1.1%), and the United Arab Emirates (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany, Canada, and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-3.6%), the UK (-3.9%), and Saudi Arabia (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (4%), the UK (4%), and Saudi Arabia (2%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Malaysia, and China saw its share reduced by -1.9%, and -15.5% from 2007 to 2017, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($847M), the U.S. ($831M), and France ($533M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together comprising 35% of global imports.

China (+21.3% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lamb and sheep meat Import Prices By Country

The average lamb and sheep meat import price stood at $5,832 per tonne in 2017, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when import increased by 23% year-to-year. In that year, average import price for lamb and sheep meat reached its maximum level of $6,690 per tonne. From 2012 to 2017, growth of average import price for lamb and sheep meat stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was Germany ($9,481 per tonne), while China ($3,581 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by China (+7.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
